Tenor Taormina
to Sing at 48th Annual Mario Lanza Ball
PHILADELPHIA, PA. April 20, 2009 Internationally acclaimed tenor Giuseppe Taormina will be the special guest performer on Sunday November 1, 2009 at the DoubleTree Hotel on Broad Street in Philadelphia as the Mario Lanza Institute pays tribute to the legendary tenor and commemorates the 50th anniversary of his untimely passing. Legendary soprano Elaine Malbin will be the Mistress of Ceremonies and is also one of the judges for the scholarship finals that will take place during the evening. The annual dinner dance event is a fundraiser conducted by the Institute to help perpetuate Lanza’s dream of aiding young aspiring opera singers through scholarships. To date the Institute has awarded over 225 scholarships and some of the recent winners have included Joyce DiDonato, Juan Diego Florez, and James Valenti. The evening will start with a cocktail hour at 5:00 p.m. and then the Ball will begin at 6:00 p.m. with the finals of the Mario Lanza Scholarship Competition. Dinner and dancing will follow. There will also be a video presentation with clips of Lanza in opera and song and Mr. Taormina will perform.
Originally from Sicily, Tenor Giuseppe Taormina has performed all over the world and received many honors including being made the first ever Cavaliere di Collana in the United States. This will mark his first appearance at the Mario Lanza Ball and he regularly sings at Italian American events and benefits. He possesses the kind of tenor voice that brings people cheering to their feet. His charming personality and beautiful voice make for an unbeatable combination.
